A Look Back at Microsoft’s Net Meeting

Does anybody still remember a program called Net Meeting? Net Meeting was a program designed by Microsoft and came bundled with Internet Explorer 3.0. Net Meeting was one of the first instant messenger programs and was one of the first capable of making Internet calls from a computer to another computer using the Internet as a medium.

Net Meeting was eventually discontinued by Microsoft, but it left behind a significant legacy in communications software.

Net Meeting – A Pioneer in Video Conferencing Software

Before instant messengers like Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger and Skype had video calls or conferences Net Meeting already was capable of doing so.  Through a process of direct-dialing IP addresses, Net Meeting was a great way of communicating through the internet despite the relatively slow bandwidth at that time.
